SILAS
THE MAN WHO SANG AT MIDNIGHT
“Paul's companion who sang hymns at midnight in a Philippian jail.”
MEET SILAS
Beaten with rods and locked in the deepest cell, Silas did the unthinkable at midnight — he sang. And the prison doors flew open.
THE STORY
Silas was a trusted leader of the Jerusalem church, chosen to carry the apostles' letter to Antioch — and then chosen by Paul as his companion for the second missionary journey. In Philippi it cost him: stripped, beaten with rods, and fastened in stocks in the inner prison. 'But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.' Then the earthquake — every door opened, every chain loosed. When the terrified jailer drew his sword, they cried out, 'Do yourself no harm, we are all here!' That night the jailer and his whole household were baptized, washing the very wounds he had watched them receive. Worship in the dark breaks more than chains.
