ELIZABETH
MOTHER OF THE FORERUNNER
“The barren woman who bore the forerunner of the Messiah.”
MEET ELIZABETH
Barren and gray-haired, righteous and waiting — until an angel promised the impossible. Elizabeth carried John the Baptist, and her baby leapt when Jesus came near.
THE STORY
Elizabeth and Zechariah were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly — and childless, and old. Then Gabriel stood by the altar with impossible news: 'Your prayer is heard.' In her sixth month, young Mary hurried to her door carrying an even greater secret — and the moment Mary's greeting reached Elizabeth's ears, the baby leapt in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit: 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And blessed is she who believed!' The first person in history to celebrate the unborn Jesus was an old woman whose own long-delayed answer was dancing inside her.
