Resting Under God's Peace
OPENING PRAYER
Father, thank You for carrying me through this day. As evening comes, help me to examine my heart in the light of Your Word and to rest in Christ through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”

Two Mindsets, Two Directions
As the day closes, this passage calls us to honest reflection. Paul contrasts the mind set on the flesh with the mind set on the Spirit. He is not describing two temporary moods but two governing directions of life. The flesh resists God and cannot produce true peace. The Spirit leads into life and peace because He unites believers to Christ and renews them from within. Evening is a fitting time to ask what has shaped our thoughts today. Were we ruled by self-protection, pride, craving, and fear? Or were we increasingly directed by the Spirit toward trust, holiness, and obedience? Scripture teaches that peace is not found by indulging the old nature but by walking in step with the new life given in Christ. This passage turns our eyes away from superficial self-evaluation and toward the deeper issue of what mind has governed us.
The Spirit Dwells in Believers
Paul gives strong comfort here: believers are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in them. The Christian's hope tonight does not rest on having lived a flawless day. It rests on belonging to Christ and having His Spirit within. The indwelling Spirit is not an optional blessing for a few mature saints; He is the mark of every true believer. Because the Spirit dwells in us, we are no longer abandoned to our old condition. There may still be battles, failures, and grief over sin, yet the decisive reality has changed. Christ is in His people by His Spirit, and therefore the direction of life has changed as well. This truth guards us from despair. We examine ourselves seriously, but we do so as those who know that God is at work within us, making us alive to righteousness and drawing us again to Jesus.
Hope for Body and Soul
The passage ends with resurrection hope. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to believers' mortal bodies. What a way to end the day. Our peace is not limited to emotional relief for a few evening hours. It is anchored in the triumph of Christ over sin and death. The Spirit's present work in us is connected to our future bodily resurrection. That means the peace we taste now is a foretaste of complete redemption to come. Tonight we can rest knowing that our Savior lives, our future is secure, and the Spirit's presence in us is God's pledge that He will finish what He has begun. Even where there has been anxiety, conflict, or repentance today, the believer can lie down in hope. Christ has conquered, the Spirit dwells within, and God's final word over His children is life.
