The Spirit Gives Life
Today we consider how the Holy Spirit brings life through Christ, renews our inner person, and teaches us to walk in living dependence on God.

Awakened by the Spirit
OPENING PRAYER
Father, thank You for the gift of a new day and for the life You give through Your Son. Please quiet my heart, open Your Word to me, and help me depend on the Holy Spirit as I begin this day.
“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”

Life Begins With Belonging
This morning’s passage brings us immediately to a dividing line that matters more than our schedule, our mood, or our sense of readiness. Scripture teaches that the Christian life is not merely improved behavior but a new kind of life rooted in belonging to Christ. Romans 8:9-11 shows that those who are in Christ are indwelt by the Spirit of God. That means our hope does not rest on self-effort, religious performance, or emotional energy. The deepest truth about a believer is that the Holy Spirit lives within. As we begin the day, this steadies us. We may feel weak, distracted, or burdened, but the presence of the Spirit does not depend on how strong we feel. It depends on God’s saving work in Christ. The Spirit marks us as Christ’s own, and that belonging changes how we face every hour ahead.
Life in Mortal Bodies
Romans 8:10-11 holds together two realities we often separate. On the one hand, we still live in mortal bodies touched by weakness, temptation, and the effects of a fallen world. On the other hand, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. Scripture teaches that this life is not only future resurrection, though that glorious promise is included, but also present spiritual vitality. The Holy Spirit turns our hearts toward God, stirs faith in Christ, convicts us of sin, and enables obedience. We do not begin the day as spiritually self-sustaining people. We begin as dependent people who need the Spirit to animate what God has already made alive. Even our most ordinary tasks can be done with a new inward posture: not merely surviving, but living before God in Christ.
Hope for Today and Tomorrow
This passage also lifts our eyes beyond the pressure of today. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in believers. That truth gives solid hope when our hearts grow tired. The Christian’s life is joined to the risen Christ, and the Spirit is the living bond of that union. So we can meet the day with resurrection confidence. We are not trapped in spiritual deadness, nor are we abandoned to fear about the future. Scripture teaches that the Spirit’s indwelling presence is both a present comfort and a pledge of coming glory. Today, then, we receive the Word with open hands. We ask the Lord not merely to help us manage our duties, but to make us keenly aware that His life is at work within us through the Holy Spirit.
GO FURTHER IN THE WORD

LIVE IT TODAY
Begin the day by remembering that if you are in Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells in you. Face your responsibilities not as a self-powered person, but as one who belongs to Jesus and is sustained by His life. Ask the Lord to make that truth shape your thoughts, choices, and responses today.
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You that Your Spirit gives life to Your people. Teach me to live this day in humble dependence, steady hope, and joyful obedience.
