The Big Picture

Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul, likely while he was in prison, to believers in and around Ephesus. This letter opens not with a problem to correct, but with praise. Ephesians 1:3 begins one long, soaring sentence in Greek (1:3–14) that celebrates God’s saving work from eternity past to eternity future. Paul is blessing God because God has first blessed His people.

This verse sets the tone for the whole letter: who believers are in Christ, what God has given them, and how they should live in light of that grace. The focus is not mainly on material prosperity, but on the riches of salvation—election, adoption, redemption, forgiveness, the Spirit’s seal, and an eternal inheritance. All of it comes “in Christ,” which is one of the great themes of Ephesians.

Looking Closer

“Blessed” first refers to God: eulogētos (εὐλογητός), meaning “worthy of praise.” Then Paul says God has “blessed” us: eulogeō (εὐλογέω), to bestow favor or benefit. We praise God because He has poured out His favor on us.

“Every spiritual blessing” uses pneumatikē (πνευματική), meaning “spiritual,” not unreal or less true, but belonging to the Holy Spirit and the realm of God’s salvation. These blessings are deeper and more lasting than earthly gifts.

“In the heavenly places” is en tois epouraniois (ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις). In Ephesians, this points to the unseen realm where Christ reigns and where believers already share in His victory and status, even while still living on earth.

Most important is “in Christ” — en Christō (ἐν Χριστῷ). This is the heart of the verse. Every blessing comes through union with Jesus. God does not merely give gifts apart from His Son; He gives us blessing by joining us to Christ Himself.

Scripture Speaks to Scripture

• 2 Corinthians 1:20 — All God’s promises are “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ; He is the source of every true blessing.
• Colossians 2:9–10 — In Christ the fullness of God dwells, and believers are made complete in Him.
• 1 Peter 1:3–4 — God’s mercy gives new birth into a living hope and an imperishable inheritance.
• Romans 8:32 — If God gave His Son for us, He will graciously give us all things needed for salvation and life in Him.

What It Means for You

This verse invites you to begin with worship, not worry. Before Paul says what Christians must do, he reminds them of what God has already done. If you are in Christ, you are not spiritually poor, forgotten, or empty. You have been given every blessing needed to know God, belong to His family, fight sin, endure suffering, and walk in hope.

It also corrects how we measure blessing. God’s greatest gifts are not found in comfort, success, or possessions, but in Christ—His forgiveness, presence, Spirit, and promises. So when life feels thin, preach this truth to your heart: in Jesus, God has already given you riches that cannot fade.

Father, blessed are You for giving every spiritual blessing to Your people in Christ. Help me live today with a worshipful heart, resting not in passing things but in the fullness of grace You have given through Your Son. Amen.
