Original Word
παρρησιάζομαι (parrēsiazomai, Strong’s G3955) — “to speak freely, openly, courageously.” In , “boldly” comes from this Greek idea of fearless, unhindered speech.
Meaning
This word carries the sense of frankness, confidence, and freedom in speaking. It is not harshness or self-confidence, but a God-given courage to say what must be said without shrinking back.
In This Verse
Paul asks for prayer not mainly for safety, but for boldness to proclaim the gospel clearly. Even as an apostle, he knew that courage in witness is a gift from God, and he wanted his mouth opened to make Christ’s saving truth known without fear.
Elsewhere in Scripture
- Acts 4:29 — “grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word”
- Acts 28:31 — “preaching the kingdom of God… with all confidence, no one forbidding him”

Take It To Heart
Jesus is the mystery now revealed—the Savior we do not need to hide. Ask Him for this same holy boldness: not to draw attention to yourself, but to make much of Christ with love, clarity, and courage.
