The Big Picture

Paul wrote Colossians to believers in Colossae, a young church facing teachings that lowered Jesus by treating Him as only one spiritual power among many. In Colossians 1, Paul answers by lifting our eyes to the absolute supremacy of Christ. Verses 15–20 form a breathtaking portrait of who Jesus is: the eternal Son, Creator, Sustainer, Head of the church, and Reconciler of all things.

So when Paul says, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation,” he is not saying Jesus was created. He is saying that the God no one can see has made Himself known perfectly in His Son, and that Christ stands in the highest place over all creation. The verses that follow make this plain: “by Him all things were created” (v.16). The Creator cannot be part of the created order.

Looking Closer

“Image” is the Greek eikōn (εἰκών). It means more than a likeness or resemblance; it speaks of exact representation and visible manifestation. Jesus does not merely reflect something about God—He perfectly reveals Him. To see the Son is to truly know what God is like.

“Invisible” is aoratou (ἀοράτου), reminding us that God in His divine essence cannot be seen by human eyes. Yet in Christ, the unseen God has stepped into human history.

“Firstborn” is prōtotokos (πρωτότοκος). In Scripture, this word often speaks of rank, privilege, and inheritance, not simply birth order. Israel is called God’s “firstborn” nation (Ex. 4:22), meaning chosen for special status. Here, “firstborn over all creation” means Jesus has supreme authority over it. He is heir, ruler, and Lord of all.

Scripture Speaks to Scripture

• John 1:1–3, 14 — Jesus is the eternal Word through whom all things were made, and He became flesh.
• Hebrews 1:1–3 — The Son is “the express image” of God’s person and upholds all things by His power.
• John 14:9 — Jesus says, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father,” echoing “image of the invisible God.”
• Psalm 89:27 — “Firstborn” can mean highest in rank: “the highest of the kings of the earth.”

What It Means for You

This verse calls you to trust Jesus completely. He is not merely a teacher, helper, or moral example. He is the full revelation of God and the rightful Lord over everything—including your life. When you wonder what God is like, look at Jesus: His compassion, holiness, truth, and sacrifice. When life feels chaotic, remember that the One who rules creation is not distant from you. He is worthy of your worship, obedience, and deep confidence.

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me the Father perfectly. Help me to see Your glory more clearly, trust Your rule more fully, and worship You as Lord over every part of my life. Amen.
