TABITHA (DORCAS)
FULL OF GOOD WORKS — AND RAISED FROM THE DEAD
“The seamstress full of good works — raised back to life by Peter.”
MEET TABITHA (DORCAS)
The widows of Joppa stood weeping, holding up the tunics she had sewn for them. Then Peter knelt, prayed, and said two words: 'Tabitha, arise.'
THE STORY
In the seaside town of Joppa lived a disciple named Tabitha — Dorcas in Greek — and Scripture gives her a résumé heaven loves: 'This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did.' She sewed clothes for the widows, the most forgotten people of her world. When she fell sick and died, the church sent for Peter, and the widows stood around him weeping, showing him the tunics and garments Dorcas had made — grief measured in stitches. Peter put them all out, knelt down, prayed, and turned to the body: 'Tabitha, arise.' She opened her eyes and sat up. 'And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord.' Her needle and thread became an evangelist.
