LYDIA
THE LORD OPENED HER HEART
“The seller of purple whose opened heart opened her home — Europe's first convert.”
MEET LYDIA
A successful businesswoman selling royal purple cloth — Europe's first recorded Christian convert, whose opened heart immediately opened her home.
THE STORY
By a riverside in Philippi, Paul found a group of praying women. Among them was Lydia, a seller of purple from Thyatira — a dealer in the most luxurious cloth of the ancient world. Luke records it simply: 'The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.' She and her household were baptized that day, and her first act as a believer was hospitality: 'If you have judged me to be faithful… come to my house.' The church of Philippi — Paul's most joyful letter — began in Lydia's living room.
