DEBORAH
JUDGE • PROPHETESS • MOTHER IN ISRAEL
“The judge and prophetess who arose as a mother in Israel.”
MEET DEBORAH
In days when everyone did what was right in their own eyes, Deborah sat under a palm tree and judged Israel — a prophetess who heard God and a leader who called a nation to courage.
THE STORY
Deborah summoned Barak with the word of the LORD: take ten thousand men, and God will deliver Sisera's iron chariots into your hand. Barak answered, 'If you will go with me, then I will go.' She went — and Israel triumphed. Then judge and general sang together: 'When leaders lead in Israel, when the people willingly offer themselves, bless the LORD!' She called herself simply 'a mother in Israel' — the one who arose so a generation could live free.
