What Did We Present Today?

Evening is a fitting time to ask the honest question raised by this passage: to whom were the members of our bodies presented today? Paul speaks plainly about yielding ourselves either to uncleanness and lawlessness or to righteousness leading to holiness. The Christian life is not merely inward sentiment; it is embodied surrender. Eyes, tongue, hands, thoughts, desires, time, and strength all become instruments either for sin or for God. This examination is not meant to trap the believer in hopeless introspection. It is meant to uncover the direction of our lives. Throughout the day we have been offering ourselves, in small and large ways, to one master or another. Scripture teaches that grace does not leave this question untouched. Because Christ has freed us from sin’s dominion, we are now called to present ourselves as servants of righteousness. Tonight, then, we do not hide. We bring the real day before the Lord and ask Him to judge truly and heal deeply.

The Fruit That Follows

Paul asks what fruit came from the things of which believers are now ashamed. Sin always promises life and pays in corruption. Even when its consequences are hidden from others, its inward fruit is emptiness, confusion, guilt, and distance in fellowship with God. By contrast, the fruit of being set free from sin and enslaved to God is holiness, and the end is everlasting life. This is crucial for reflection. Holiness is not sterile. It bears fruit. It shapes affections, redirects habits, strengthens conscience, and produces increasing freedom for joyful obedience. If the day has exposed compromise, Scripture teaches that confession is the path of restored fellowship, not denial. If the day has shown grace at work, give thanks without pride, because all true fruit is owed to the Lord. The Spirit is patient in sanctification. He does not abandon believers in the struggle, but steadily forms Christlike life in them.

Resting in the Gift

The passage closes by contrasting wages and gift. Sin pays wages; God gives eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. That final note is a soft place to rest tonight. Our hope does not depend on how well we performed our consecration today. If it did, peace would vanish. Our hope rests in the gift of God given in His Son. Yet this gift does not make holiness optional; it makes holiness possible and precious. Because life is received, not earned, we can repent without terror and obey without boasting. We lay down tonight as people still in need of grace and still supplied by grace. The same Savior who justified us continues to sanctify us by His Spirit. Therefore we can end the day with both honesty and comfort: honest about remaining sin, comforted by a greater salvation. The Lord who has begun His good work will not fail to complete it.
